Overview

The Communication Studies major allows students to explore the complex and dynamic nature of communication in multiple contexts. Not only do students learn how to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, but they also study the impact communication has on the world around us. They learn that communication functions as the relational and collective force that constructs the social world.

Good communication skills are essential in almost every industry today. In fact, employers identify the ability to verbally communicate with people inside and outside an organization and the ability to create and/or edit written documents among the top ten skills they seek when hiring new college graduates. Stated bluntly, Communication Studies graduates have the knowledge and critical skills employers want. They develop strong verbal, nonverbal, and written communication skills and cultivate the ability to speak well in front of small and large audiences.

At Eastern, we offer options in corporate communication, interpersonal communication, and mass communication.  We also offer an online degree completion program called "Communication in Organizations" for those who can’t commit to moving to campus. These options allow students to tailor their area of study to their interests.

We encourage you to check out each option to determine which one best fits what you want to do after graduation.

Degree: Bachelor of Arts

Completion time: 46-49 semester hours required for major depending on concentration and 120 Credit Hours for graduation
